Warren Voters Approve Millage Saving Dozens Of Police And Fire Jobs
WARREN (WWJ) - UPDATE - 11 P.M. Warren residents have approved a 5-year millage which will save dozens of police and fire department jobs.
While voters across the county of Macomb renewed a tax to continue funding programs and services for veterans.
The public safety millage approval is expected to cost the owner of a $100,000 home an estimated $245 a year.
EARLIER:
Jernard Everett, who voted "yes," said public safety layoffs would leave Warren in dire straits.
"It's gonna pretty much be like ... you know, Detroit. And so I felt like it was real important to come out here definitely for that and vote," Everett said.
If approved, the tax would raise $16 million its first year.
Warren Fire Commissioner Wilburt "Skip"McAdams said, regardless, he expects to see regionalization of some public services down the road.
"We do have mutual aid agreements with most of our surrounding communities and, unfortunately, that trend will increase -- and we have used them as well as they have used us," McAdams said.
"So, the need for efficiency, for regionalism, has grown and will continue to grow, because even with this millage we still have to be frugal with the tax dollars," he said.
