Virtual Tie In Race For Mich. GOP Nomination

The latest poll shows the Republican race for governor in Michigan is a three-way contest.

The Detroit News- Channel Four poll says there's a virtual tie between Congressman Pete Hoekstra and Attorney General Mike Cox for the GOP nomination, with each candidate getting the backing of about 26 percent of voters surveyed. Businessman Rick Snyder is a close third, five points away.

WWJ's Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick said it will be a close race and the Detroit News-WDIV poll suggests Cox and Hoekstra have the lead, but all things could change moving toward the August 3rd election depending on the ads and who can get out their vote.

Mike Cox told WWJ he believes he has the momentum.  "I think we're in great shape, recent polling shows that we're in good shape and we're trying to close out over the last two weeks," Cox said.

Cox has been absent from the airwaves for a while but has resumed campaign ads.  He said it's not for lack of money; he was just waiting for the right time.

"You want to save it for the last couple of weeks, the last two weeks people are paying attention, so we're on the air right now," Cox said.

14 percent of voters are still undecided, with two weeks to go before the August 3rd primary.

Among Democrats, House Speaker Andy Dillon continues to enjoy a lead over Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.
