Man Killed In Truck-Into-Building Crash
DETROIT (WWJ) - A man has died following an accident late Thursday morning on Detroit's east side.
Detroit police, fire and EMS were called to the scene, near East Warren and Chalmers, following the crash around 11:30 a.m.
Witnesses said a pickup truck slammed into an auto shop and wound up laying on its side inside of the building.
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with one woman who works across the street from that shop.
"It was a green Suburban truck flying, doing a hundred, up Warren. They hit a red pickup truck and the red pickup truck flipped over for a time and it landed right into that collision shop, right into that door of the collision shop," she said.
Police said the driver of the pickup was killed and the SUV driver was hospitalized. There was a child riding in the pick up truck but he or she is expected to be OK.
Detroit Police officer Scott Sheets said speeding is an issue in this area.
"The Eastern District was beefing up patrols in the area to try and slow the traffic down," Sheets said.
He said police are looking into reports the traffic lights there may be mistimed.
No names have been released.
