Valenti And Foster: Caldwell Didn't Expect The Hail Mary, But Should Expect A Pink Slip

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) It wasn't just a loss, it was an ugly loss, the kind to which Lions fans are unfortunately accustomed.

And when Mike Valenti and Terry Foster took the mics for their show Friday afternoon, the Lions' record-making loss to the Packers on national television was the topic.

And their verdict was swift: Coach Jim Caldwell should be fired.

"Jim Caldwell should not have a job, the mismanagement in late game situations is unforgivable. The amount of suckitude that goes into that play ... you gotta work hard to put a team in that spot," Valenti said.

"First of all, you never, ever rush three guys. Mistake No. 1, rush four, stay in your lanes."

Megatron wasn't there to help, despite the fact Golden Tate confirmed the team had practiced that scenario many times. Caldwell was prepared for a lateral situation, obviously not anticipating the Packers' choice to use Rodgers rocket arm and take their changes with a Hail Mary.

Valenti added "your coach did not expect a Hail Mary, he should expect a pink slip."

He added that Caldwell time and again finds way to screw up, and it's time for him to go. "He's bad with a capital B in late game spots," Valenti said.

Caldwell has weathered a storm this season, while many others in the organization have not. Offensive Coach Joe Lombardi was the first domino to fall, followed by team president Tom Lewand and GM Martin Mayhew.

Owner Martha Ford, 90, suddenly became a visible presence at a press conference and games. "You expect me to believe ... she's going to float down from the clouds and become George Halas," Valenti said.

He added that if she wants to prove she's on her game, and as tough as people want to believe she is, the widow and Ford family matriarch has to fire Caldwell -- today.
