Two Is Enough: Holland Won't Raise Dog Limit

HOLLAND (AP) - In the southwestern Michigan city of Holland, two dogs per household will have to be enough for now.

City Council on Wednesday rejected a proposed amendment to an ordinance that would have increased the number of dogs permitted per single-family household from two to three. The issue came up after a family was cited this year for having three dogs.

The limit under the current ordinance doesn't count puppies under the age of four months. The city doesn't limit cats or birds.

Mayor Kurt Dykstra says two dogs is an "appropriate number" for an urban area.

Councilman Mike Trethewey, who backed the proposed amendment, said the change could help get stray dogs off the street. He says City Council could be asked to reconsider the issue in the future.
