Troopers Chase Motorcycles From Detroit To State Line Topping Speeds Of 135 MPH; All 3 Evade Arrest
DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say police chased after a trio of speeding motorcycles from Detroit all the way to the Michigan-Ohio border, hitting speeds of 135 miles per hour, but all three motorcyclists were able to evade arrest.
The situation unfolded just before 10 a.m. Monday when Michigan State Police troopers working speed enforcement on the Southfield Freeway (M-39) near I-96 clocked three motorcycles traveling at 120 mph, according to police.
The troopers attempted to catch the motorcycles and perform a traffic stop, but all three continued to flee southbound on M-39.
The pursuit continued south on M-39 and onto westbound I-94, police said, with speeds increasing to 135 mph. One of the motorcycles exited I-94 onto Telegraph Road and another exited on Ecorse Road. The third motorcycle continued on westbound I-94, with troopers close behind, and then exited onto southbound I-275.
Police say the lone motorcyclist exited I-275 at Sibley Road but quickly changed their mind and maneuvered back onto the freeway.
The chase continued through Monroe County until it reached the Michigan-Ohio state line. At that point, troopers terminated the pursuit and notified the Ohio State Highway Patrol. It's unknown if the third motorcyclist was stopped in Ohio.
