Tri-County Residents Set To Vote On Detroit Zoo Tax Renewal

ROYAL OAK (AP) - Voters in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties will decide next month whether to renew a special property tax to help fund operations at the Detroit Zoo.

Backers of the renewal are stepping up their efforts, distributing lawn signs this week featuring animals and urging people to "Renew for the Zoo" on Aug. 2.

Voters are being asked to renew a 0.1-mill tax for 10 years. Property taxes will not increase from the current rate if the renewal is approved. For a homeowner whose home is worth $200,000, the cost is $10 a year. Money is used for zoo operations and maintenance.

The tax was initially passed in 2008 to support the zoo in Royal Oak.
