Tree-Planting Effort Taking Place On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (AP) — A company seeking to combat blight in Detroit is hosting its second annual volunteer planting day to beautify land on the city's east side.

Hantz Woodlands purchased nearly 180 acres for just over $500,000 in 2013. The company, an outgrowth of Hantz Farms, has been working to plant trees after clearing the collection of abandoned lots and removing debris, overgrowth, trash and vacant homes.

More than 1,400 people volunteered to plant 15,000 saplings last May. Another event is taking place Saturday to plant 5,000 more trees.

Planting is scheduled to take place rain or shine and will go until all of the trees are planted. A full day of events is planned as part of the effort.
