Tigers 5, Yankees 3

NEW YORK (WWJ/AP) - Miguel Cabrera hits a two run shot in the first inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the N. Y. Yankees 5-3 in Game 2 of the ALDS on Sunday.

As heard on WXYT 1270 - the Tigers squeak away with the win after the Yankees stage a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning and even the series at 1 all.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde held off a furious New York ninth-inning rally and the Tigers avoided a major slip-up, hanging on for the win.

The Yankees scored twice in the ninth and, helped when Detroit catcher Alex Avila lost his footing on the slick on-deck circle, got a chance to win it.

Robinson Cano, who hit a grand slam and had six RBIs as the Yankees won the opener, came up with two outs and runners on first and second. After wiping away raindrops from his helmet, Cano hit a routine groundball to end it.

Detroit starting pitcher Max Scherzer had an excellent outing -pitching a no-hit ball into the sixth inning.

Robinson Cano singled with one out in the sixth inning for the New York Yankees' first hit off Scherzer in Game 2 of the AL division series.

With the series tied at one game each - the best of five series will resume in Detroit on Monday for Game 3.
