Thousands Lace Up Their Running Shoes For Marathon
DETROIT (WWJ) - Some 27,000 people laced up their running shoes for the 36th Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon on Sunday.
Among those participating: the husband and wife team of Brian and Pat Shin of Allen Park, both of whom completed the 5k run. Pat Shin told WWJ Newsradio 950 that she was pleased with her performance.
"It was good," Shin said. "My goad was to not stop running, and I didn't, so I did what I wanted to do."
Brian Shin said he, too, enjoyed participating in the race. He said he couldn't help but notice the tighter security. The stepped-up police presence, undoubtedly, an offshoot of the bombings at the Boston Marathon in April of this year.
"There seemed to be more police on the corners than there were before," Brian Shin said. "These last few years, it seems like it was just mostly volunteer people, but I noticed there was a lot more."
The couple said they also noticed bomb sniffing dogs, and one person who participated in the 5k said it was the tightest security she's seen at any marathon.
