This Valentine's Day, instead of the same old song and dance, take your special someone to the theater or a live performance. There are plenty of events going on for the holiday in Detroit this year, so choose the play and venue that best suits your tastes as a couple. Nothing is more romantic than jazz, and the DSO will be hosting Gretchen Parlato and Vijay Iyer on Friday, February 17. In her 10th year performing, the DSO's website describes Parlato as "A haunting, seductive voice that captivates from the very first breath," and Iver brings his distinctive style of pianistry to the performance. Tickets can be bought on the DSO's website or by phone via the box office.

The Tipping Point Theatre in Northville will be presenting "The Love List" through February 19. Warning audience members to be careful what they wish for, this amusing comedy is about a man's wish list for what he wants in his dream woman. Soon after Bill creates this list at his best friend Leon's request, a woman named Justine appears displaying the demeanor of a woman who has been his girlfriend for years. Leon is worried he may have created a "Frankenstein," and the friends tamper with their list, only to make Justine change as well. Tickets can be bought by calling the box office during open hours.

"The Apartment" at Redford Theater
February 17 at 8 p.m., and February 18 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Redford Theater will be showing the classic 1960 movie "The Apartment" with Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray, all premier comedy stars of their day. "The Apartment" is a comedy about a businessman who allows the executives at his company use his apartment for their extramarital trysts in attempts to climb the corporate ladder. The Redford Theater also has a live organ player, so if you see the 2 p.m. screening on the 18th make sure to get there by 1:30 to listen to the organ overture being played. The theater offers free parking north of its building.

Drag Queen Bingo at Five 15
Bingo/drag queen show Friday, February 17, and Sat. February 18 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Five 15 is known around Royal Oak for its kitschy gift shop and drag queen bingo on Friday and Saturday nights. It offers "Bingo food fare" and drinks from the coffee bar for purchase during bingo. Games, laughter, coffee and drag—what better way to start off your Valentine's Day weekend? Drag Queen Bingo is 18+, and the host(ess) vary from week to week. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the bingo game starts at 8.

This Valentine's Day weekend, the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase will be featuring Tina Giorgi, a comedienne who is making her way into the national spotlight. Hailed as "comedy with a brain," her performance is sure to make your Valentine's Day date smile. Giorgi has performed at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival, Toyota Comedy Festival and the Marshall's Women of Comedy Festival, and she won the Bud Light Fox 5 Comedy Festival. Giorgi was also a finalist in the National Lampoon Comedy Search. Not only is she funny, she's also an actress who has appeared in a documentary film and has done radio commercials for Castro Convertibles and Dennison Chili.
