Terry Foster: Team USA Blanks Canada In CONCACAF Gold Cup
Detroit— Tim Ream woke up Sunday morning in his hotel room, opened the curtains and saw a bright sun beaming at him. It was a fresh moment and a fresh start as he took a moment to forget a 4-0 defeat to Spain the previous day. It was a new day and a new opponent to look forward to.
The United States used its education from that day to propel it to a 2-0 victory over Canada Tuesday in their first game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup before 28,209 at Ford Field.
Instead of standing flat-footed, Team USA attacked from the jump and, outside of a late flurry by Canada, was the dominant team against a team it usually beats. It had five corner kicks within the first 11 minutes of the game.
The United States is now 8-0-6 in its last 14 games with its Canadian rivals and outside of beefs about the makeshift grass field, there was little to complain about.
"What you do after a game like Spain is you put it behind you, but you gather little nuggets and try to build off of them," Ream said. "You take the mistakes and miscues and you fix them. We want to put a game like that in the past, but there are valuable lessons you learn from."
