Stopping The "Summer Slide"
Unfortunately, for many kids, "Summer Slide" doesn't mean not plugging a plastic device into a hose to slip around on the lawn – it is reading ability lost over the summer due to lack of practice.
The Scholastic Summer Challenge is a free reading program dedicated to stopping the "Summer Slide" and encouraging kids to read more books this summer. The Summer Challenge invites kids to log the minutes they spend reading as they read, and the results will all be tallied toward breaking the World Record for reading.
The 20 schools with the most minutes logged will receive recognition in the 2012 Scholastic Book of World Records.
