State Senator Wants Community Schools In Detroit
A local state senator finds himself in the nation's capitol Monday.
State Senator Hansen Clarke will focus on education during his visit to the nation's capitol.
Clarke told WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas his goal is "to speak with officials in the U.S. Department of Education on how we can get community schools established in Detroit."
And what does he mean by community schools?
"These are schools that offer more than just classrooms during the daytime, but provide enrichment, mentoring programs in the evening for youth, adult education for adults who may have lost their jobs, and also other services, such as daycare," Clarke said.
He says such schools also offer recreation programs, in order to keep kids off the streets.
