State Seeks Public Comment On Pipeline Draft Documents

LANSING, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - State officials are seeking public comment on two draft requests for information and proposals that will be issued to contractors interested in performing independent risk analysis and independent alternatives analysis on pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac.

The state says the draft documents are due by Friday.

Previous drafts of the proposals have been reviewed by the Pipeline Safety Advisory Board which has provided input.

The Enbridge Line 5 pipelines carry up to 23 million gallons of oil daily beneath the waterway where Lakes Huron and Michigan meet.

In 2010, an Enbridge spill released more than 800,000 gallons of oil from a broken pipeline. It spoiled approximately 40 miles of the Kalamazoo River and Talmadge Creek.

Analyses were recommended by the Michigan Petroleum Pipeline Task Force in July 2015.

On September 3, 2015, Governor Snyder issued an executive order creating the Michigan Pipeline Safety Advisory Board. The creation of a pipeline safety advisory body was one of the recommendations included in the recently released Michigan Petroleum Pipeline Task Force Report. The MPSAB will act in an advisory capacity to the Governor and consists of 15 members compromising regulated stakeholders, government agencies and non-governmental organizations.  MORE INFORMATION
