Spring Has Sprung! Protect Your Skin From The Sun

Pat Sweeting Reporting

Now that we're getting a steadier dose of warmer weather and the sun is shining more intensely, protecting our skin from sun takes on a higher priority.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends:

• Wearing lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, slacks, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when possible.

• On your face and other exposed skin, use a water-soluable sunscreen with a sun protection factor (or SPF) of at least 30, especially if you're going to be near water -- which reflects the sun's rays intensifying the effect.

• Seeking out shade when the sun is at its hottest; usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

• Looking for a dietary source of Vitamin-D.

• … and doing annual skin checks; looking for changes that could signal problems like cancer.
