Snowfall Totals: Metro Detroit Nears All-Time Record
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Snowfall totals have been rolling in after the frozen flakes began flying Wednesday morning, bringing Metro Detroit even closer to its all-time record.
Snow has fallen across a wide swath of winter-weary southern Michigan, leaving as much as 9.3 inches on the ground and causing spin-outs and slide-off crashes as weather disrupted the morning commute and closed hundreds of schools.
The National Weather Service said the Oakland County community of Holly had 9.3 inches by Wednesday afternoon, while Mount Clemens in neighboring Macomb County had 8.9 inches. By late morning, 7 inches of snow was reported near Fowlerville, in Livingston County. There was over 5 inches in Brighton and Pinckney, 4 inches in Novi, Southfield and Troy, and 3 inches in Romulus, Brownstown Township and Allen Park.
The weather service says 6.5 inches of snow fell at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, bringing the area within 3 inches of breaking a seasonal snowfall total of 93.6 inches set in 1880-1881.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the entire region until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The Detroit area is "this close" to breaking its all-time snow record of 93.6 inches, which was set back during the winter of 1880-1881. Before Wednesday's storm, Detroit Metropolitan Airport was at a total of 84.1 inches.
Several cities have issued snow emergencies, including Auburn Hills, Berkley, Beverly Hills, Detroit, Garden City, Hazel Park, Lincoln Park, Livonia, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Royal Oak, South Lyon, Southgate, St. Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, Taylor, Trenton, Warren and Woodhaven.
The snowstorm has also caused more than 700 schools in southeast Michigan to cancel classes on Wednesday -- including all Public Schools in Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Monroe, Lapeer, Livingston, Washtenaw and St. Clair counties.
