Snow Day: Hundreds Of Schools Closed Due To Winter Weather

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Thousands of kids are getting a long weekend after a fresh covering of snow fell on southeast Michigan, causing nearly 700 schools to close.

Public schools in Macomb, Oakland, Livingston and St. Clair counties have closed for the day Friday. The Detroit Public Schools district also canceled classes, as did Wayne State University, Central Michigan University, and the University of Michigan campuses in Dearborn and Flint.

The storm that moved into the state Thursday brought a few inches of snow to the Detroit area, where roads were slippery for the morning commute.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, in effect until noon Friday. Forecasters expect a total snowfall of about one to three inches.

"There's two to four inches of snow north of metro Detroit and more than that, six to as much as eight inches north of I-69. But I think as we get into the afternoon it tapers into snow showers. Certainly the worst of this will be during the morning rush," said meteorologist Dean DeVore.

The National Weather Service said visibilities around one mile will be possible during the Friday morning rush hour.
