'Small Business Saturday' Looks To Put Local Operations In The Spotlight

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Small Business Saturday is a national initiative that marks a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy, and preserve neighborhoods around the country.

Last year, Small Business Saturday gave a boost to Main Street merchants, as consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday spent an estimated $5.7 billion with independent merchants.

Detroit Experience Factory and Build Institute are hosting the 11th annual Shop Detroit in partnership with American Express' Small Business Saturday. The event encourages people to shop at Detroit stores, not just for the holidays, but all year long. Shop Detroit will take place Saturday, November 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"We're excited to collaborate with DXF on this year's Shop Detroit," Executive Director of Build Institute April Boyle said. "Our pop-up marketplace will feature an assortment of local Detroit vendors that malls don't have."

The event will offer information about local retailers, special discounts and freebies, along with free shuttle service provided by the Office of the M-1 Rail, Michigan Science Center and Very Special Van Service to retail options throughout greater downtown.

"Just because we don't have an Old Navy on every corner doesn't mean we don't have shopping," DXF Director of Community Relations Jeanette Pierce said. "We have great small boutiques and places where you can find amazing items."

Downtown Farmington will host an open house 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to encourage shopping at small businesses. Many of the Farmington downtown merchants and businesses will participate, offering specials and complimentary items to all who visit them.

In Westland, Mayor Bill Wild will visit various businesses and raffle off a variety of gift cards ranging from $10 to $50  from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

"Statistics show that for every $100 you spend locally, $66 stays in the local community," Wild said. "That means your dollars are helping to build parks, libraries and improve fire and police departments."

Small businesses create two out of every three net new private sector jobs in America, helping spur economic development in communities across our country and giving millions of families and individuals the opportunity to achieve the American dream.
