Sit-In At Ferguson Leads To Arrests
DETROIT (WWJ) - A group of students, and others, staged a sit-in at Catherine Ferguson Academy Friday evening. When it was time to lock up the building for the night, the demonstrators were asked to leave.
That's when Detroit Police stepped in:
WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Shanta Driver, who is with BAMN, By Any Means Necessary. She helped organize the sit-in.
"They were arrested because they were doing a peaceful sit-in in Catherine Ferguson in the library, to protest the closing of the that school and all the rest of the Detroit Public schools and to defend public education," says Driver.
But police say they were arrested for refusing to leave the building on their own. They were taken to a nearby precinct, processed and released.
The school is on Detroit's school closing list.
The Financial Manager of Detroit Schools named 45 schools which will either be turned into "charter" schools or close altogether in 2011.
