Scherzer A "Slam Dunk" For Cy Young Award Says Former Tigers Manager Leyland
DETROIT (WWJ) - Former Detroit Tigers Manager Jim Leyland was honored Monday night at the Fox Theatre as part of the "Detroit Legacies in Black and White" fundraiser.
In typically modest fashion - Leyland brushed off the attention focused on him:
"Nobody owes me anything and for something like this, don't get me wrong..it's touching...it's nice , but it's not the stuff that I'm looking for," said Leyland. "I'm not looking for any kind of accolades . I was paid for what I did. Hopefully, people felt like I did it pretty good and that's it."
As talk turned to baseball with the Cy Young and MVP winners to be announced this week. Leyland was asked about the season Max Scherzer had this year.
"Max was absolutely terrific and I think the biggest thing is that Max was healthy - he made all the starts, you know? And I think he's a slam dunk to win a Cy Young myself," he said.
Leyland says Miguel Cabrera deserves the MVP after playing with an injury during the year and into the postseason.
What of the Monday night's honor for him?
"It must be boring up here, that's all I can tell ya'," Leyland said with a laugh. "I'm just kidding you ... it's nice, it's a nice tribute and I love Dave Bing (who was also honored during the event)."
Leyland, who still works for the Tigers, said he'll be going to winter meetings and spending some time at spring training next season.
