Safety City Hosts Royal Oak Summer Camp

ROYAL OAK -- Looking for something fun for the kids to do when school lets out for the summer? Think about the first-ever Safety City U.S.A. summer camp in Royal Oak

For children 6 to 9 years old, the three, one-week camp sessions are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  Cost is $125 per camper. The fee includes all activities, a T-shirt and a daily snack.

But this isn't just a babysitting session: Programs will include fire, water, bike, police and animal safety.  A "police day" will address stranger danger, Internet safety and bullying. An "animal safety day" will take place at the Detroit Zoo. All activities are led by health care professionals from Beaumont Health System, as well as fire/police personnel and trained volunteers.

"It's great to combine a week of fun with potentially life-saving lessons," says Donna Bucciarelli, R.N., trauma prevention coordinator, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and program manager, Safety City U.S.A.

The year-round safety center in Royal Oak is an injury prevention education program of Beaumont's Level I Trauma Center.  The emphasis is on "hands-on" safety education to reduce injuries and save lives. According to the National Safety Council, preventable injuries send 27 million Americans to hospital emergency centers each year. Unintentional injury remains the No. 1 killer of children ages 1 to 14 in the United States.

While most of the safety education activities at Safety City U.S.A. are aimed at school children ages 5 to 12, afternoon and evening programs are also offered to teens, parents and seniors living in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

Safety City U.S.A. is in the Northwood Shopping Center, 30955 N. Woodward Ave. at 13 Mile Road in Royal Oak. The center includes replicas of a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and family room.  It also includes an indoor park setting.
