'Are You Faster Than A Cop?' Royal Oak Police Host Fitness Fundraiser

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Are you faster than a cop? That's what Royal Oak police are asking in an upcoming fundraiser.

Police Chief Corrigan O'Donahue says they're challenging resident to go through a police fitness program — but it's nothing too grueling: a mile-and-a-half track run, some push-ups and sit-ups.

Funds raised will support the Royal Oak Challenge for Kids, a health and fitness program.

"We're not gonna be tough at all, this is just a fun event," O'Donahue told  WWJ's Laura Bonnell. "It's not really designed for competitive runners, although any competitive runner is welcome to participate. We're hoping that a lot of kids participate."

An K-9 officer will also be on hand for a meet-and-greet — something O'Donahue says is one of the event's biggest attractions one of the big attractions — and kids will get a chance to sit in a patrol car.

"I just hope we get a good crowd out there," O'Donahue said. "Usually our K-9 officer Ryker is the most popular officer in the department — people get to see him. The kids can climb around in a police car, Ford's gonna have a Mustang, if anyone wants to test-drive a Mustang, and hopefully we just have a fun morning."

The "Are You Faster Than A Cop?" event happens Saturday at 9 a.m. at Royal Oak High School, rain or shine. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
