Robbie Ray To Start For Tigers On May 6

By Ashley Dunkak

CBS DETROIT - The key cog in the controversial Doug Fister trade, left-handed starter Robbie Ray will make his major league debut for the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, May 6.

Ray will start in place of 2013 ERA champion Anibal Sanchez, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a laceration on his middle finger.

In five outings for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens this season, Ray has pitched 28.1 innings and recorded a 1.59 ERA. He has 27 hits and five walks while striking out 21. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is an impressive 4.20.

The Washington Nationals drafted Ray in 2010, and since then Ray has steadily progressed through the ranks.

It upset many Tigers fans when general manager Dave Dombrowski traded Fister, a solid starter for the Tigers last season, for a seemingly unimpressive collection of players - Ray, reliever Ian Krol and utility man Steve Lombardozzi (since traded). The centerpiece of the trade was Ray, whom Dombrowski touted as a future starter for Detroit.

In just one week, Ray could take a step toward proving Dombrowski right.
