Red Wings And Forward Gustav Nyquist Agree To Terms On A Two-Year Deal
Detroit, MI… Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland announced today that the club has agreed to terms with restricted free agent forward Gustav Nyquist on a two-year contract. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
Nyquist, 23, was selected by Detroit in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He appeared in 22 games for the Red Wings during the 2012-13 season, collecting six points (3-3-6), an 'even' rating and was named the Red Wings Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association. The Halmstad, Sweden, native also skated in all 14 postseason games for Detroit during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, registering five points (2-3-5) and becoming the first Red Wings rookie to register two overtime points in the same playoff year when he tallied the game-winning goal in Game Two of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Anaheim Ducks and assisted on Damien Brunner's goal four days later in the extra frame of Game Four vs. Anaheim.
Nyquist led the Grand Rapids Griffins in regular-season scoring in 2012-13 with 60 points (23-37-60) despite playing in just 58 games in the American Hockey League due to four separate recalls to Detroit. The 5-11, 185-lb. forward also notched seven points (2-5-7) in 10 playoff contests for the Griffins during their run to the 2013 Calder Cup championship.
Nyquist set the Griffins' rookie scoring record in 2011-12 after registering 58 points (22-36-58) in 56 games. Prior to joining the Griffins at the end of the 2010-11 season, Nyquist played three seasons at the University of Maine (NCAA, Hockey East), amassing 144 points (50-94-144) in 113 collegiate appearances.
