Quick Tips to Keep Your Spine Healthy

Dr. Marilyn Gates, director of the Elderspine Surgical Program at Henry Ford Medical Group, offers these quick tips to seniors for keeping your spine healthy:
• Keep abdominals as strong as they can be.
• Watch your weight. Many times, spine-related pain can be lessened by simply losing a few pounds. Gates recommends Weight Watchers as a program for learning healthy eating.
• Exercise regularly, and include exercises for the back. If you are not very mobile, there are exercises that are very effective that can be done in a chair.
• Make sure to get calcium in your diet.
• If you can't walk 100 yards, walk 50, twice.
• Keep moving!
