'Proposal J' Gets Voter Approval In Wayne County

DETROIT (WWJ) - It looks like voters have given a 'thumbs up' for Wayne County's Proposal J; the millage renewal to fund the county jail.

Sheriff Benny Napoleon says it was imperative that the voters approve the measure:

"It is a very serious public safety issue and they put public safety as a priority in this county and it would have been devastating had it not passed," said Napoleon.

"I have worked very hard to ensure that the public understood the significance of this millage, and I'm excited and pleased that the problems existing in Wayne county government at this point did not distract the voters," he said.

The millage is a ''renewal'' meaning taxes will not go up to fund the measure, which will generate about $39 million a year for the county jail.
