Program Fair, STEM Awareness Day Set At St. Clair County CC

PORT HURON -- St. Clair County Community College will have a Program Fair and STEM Awareness Day on Wednesday, March 27, in the College Center on the Port Huron campus.

Current and prospective students can drop in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. or between 4 and 6 p.m. to learn more about SC4's certificate and degree programs.

SC4 partners Ferris State University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Flint and Walsh College also will be available to discuss how students can start their education at SC4 and then transfer to a university program on SC4's Port Huron campus.

Participants will be able to speak with faculty and students from each SC4 program. Participants can get questions answered, learn what to expect, find out about types of jobs available, hear about the kinds of classes they'll take, what projects they'll do and what hands-on training they'll receive.

New this year, in conjunction with the fair, STEM Awareness Day will highlight careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Jobs in these fields are among the fastest growing and highest paying in the state and nation.

Earlier this month, the Michigan Senate adopted a resolution proclaiming March 24 to 30 as Michigan STEM Awareness Week, encouraging programs and activities to be scheduled that week highlighting science, technology, engineering and math education and related careers.

STEM Awareness Day at SC4 will include demonstrations on computer security and robotics, as well as various video presentations, in the College Center. Special events will include the unveiling of a mastodon skull replica at 12:30 p.m. and tours at 5 p.m. in the Natural Science Museum in SC4's Clara E. Mackenzie Building.

The Program Fair and STEM Awareness Day are ideal for current students who have yet to choose a major and people looking to come to SC4 to train for a new career.

Free refreshments will be available. Participants also can enter a drawing for a chance to win a basket of SC4 logo items.

SC4 offers certificates, associate degrees and options for getting started at SC4 and then transferring to a college or university.

SC4 programs are available in numerous fields, including alternative energy, business, communications, computers, education, engineering technology, health care and office administration.

Among bachelor's degree programs available on SC4's campus are criminal justice through Ferris State, elementary education through Saginaw Valley, nursing (RN to BSN) and psychology through UM-Flint, and accounting processes and management through Walsh.
