Possible Saginaw Police Changes Draw Protests

SAGINAW (AP) - The possibility of the Saginaw County sheriff's department taking over police services for the city of Saginaw is drawing protests.

MLive.com reports  protesters carrying signs with slogans such as "Keep Saginaw Police" crowded into City Council chambers on Monday night. They earlier gathered outside City Hall to protest a proposed contract between the city and Saginaw County for police services.

City Manager Darnell Earley says he received the Saginaw County sheriff's proposal Monday. It's expected to be reviewed before details are released.

Earley says officials "have to explore the options."

In Michigan, county sheriff's departments often handle local policing. Policing in Pontiac, for example, is handled by the Oakland County sheriff's department.
