PORT HURON (WWJ) - A 22-year-old woman is dead after she was mauled by two dogs, Thursday afternoon, in her Port Huron neighborhood.
Port Huron Police Lt. Scott Pike said details are sketchy as to what exactly led up to the death of Rebecca Hardy, who lived a block away from the scene of the attack, in the 1700-block of 10th Street.
"For some reason Miss. Hardy went into the backyard where these dogs were contained, and when she went into the backyard the two dogs attacked her," Pike said. "The dogs were contained in the yard, and, for reasons yet unknown to us, she climbed the fence and went into that yard."
Pike said a neighbor who witnessed the attack was able to fight the dogs off with a two-by-four, but it was too late.
"She suffered extensive injuries to the upper part of her body — mostly her head, face and neck," Pike said. "She was transferred to Port Huron Mclaren Hospital, her injuries were too extensive. So, they did their best to stabilize her and then they life flighted her to Beaumont Hospital to a trauma center, and she passed away at Beaumont Hospital."
The dogs — a pit bill terrier and a pit bull mix — are quarantined while an investigation continues.
Pike said the owner of the dogs is cooperating with police.
Hardy's death came about a day after a 4-year-old boy was mauled to death by pit bulls in Detroit.
