LANSING (AP) - Opponents of legislation that would ban local governments in Michigan from requiring employers to provide paid sick leave days have delivered petitions to the state Capitol.
The groups Mothering Justice and Working America say they delivered petitions signed by more than 2,500 Michiganians to the Michigan Restaurant Association and state Legislature on Tuesday.
The groups are opposing legislation in the Republican-led state House and Senate that would prohibit counties, townships and cities from adopting policies that require employers to provide paid or unpaid leave not required under federal law.
No local governments are currently considering such policies, but lawmakers say legislation must be put in place now as cities in other states have moved to enact such mandates.
