No New Trial For Plymouth Man In Beheading
PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - A Plymouth man convicted in the beheading of a River Rouge man four years ago will not get a new trial.
The Michigan Court of Appeals has reversed a Wayne County court order for a retrial for Jean Pierre Orlewicz and affirmed his conviction and life in prison sentence.
The nine-page court order contends that the judge erred in granting the defendant a new trial and "there is no dispute" that Orlewicz killed Daniel Sorenson, dismembered the body and tried to dispose of it by burning it.
Although Orlewicz's appeals attorney said his defense team was ineffective because testimony from three doctors wasn't allowed, the court order concluded that the defendant has not presented "any errors or infringements of his rights that warrant reversal, and he waived his public trial issue."
Orlewicz, who was 17-years-old at the time, had claimed he was acting in self defense when he killed Sorenson, who was 26 and had a reputation for aggression and violence.
