Over 1,000 without power in Indiana bracing for more severe storms on Wednesday

Days after a severe weather outbreak, thousands of NIPSCO customers are still without power, and more storms are on the way on Wednesday.

Storms on June 11 brought at least 13 tornadoes to Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Tornadoes downed power lines and destroyed houses.

Last week, over 86,000 customers were impacted by outages in Indiana. NIPSCO said crews have since restored power to around 95% of impacted customers.

As of Thursday morning, over 1,400 customers are still without power across northern Indiana. Merrillville was among the hardest hit areas still waiting for power restoration.

Homeowner Anissa Cook told CBS News Chicago she feels lucky to still be in her home despite the EF-2 tornado damage, as her neighbors were displaced.

"My front door is blown off my roof, my roof garage, and I have a shed in the back, I'm missing all the shingles off of that," Cook said.  "Patio door is blown off. I have a couple of other items in my backyard now. I have a catastrophe in my backyard of items that don't belong to me. Patio set blew away."

Cook said she is "getting nervous" with more storms approaching. She said she just got power restored last night.

With additional storm threats ahead on Wednesday. NIPSCO crews are preparing for more outages and delays in restoring power.

Two rounds of potentially severe thunderstorms are expected on Wednesday, with the first arriving in the morning and continuing into the early afternoon. Some storms could produce wind gusts up to 75 miles per hour, large hail, and torrential rainfall, especially near and south of I-80.

"We are also closely monitoring the potential for additional severe weather expected from Tuesday into Wednesday evening," NIPSCO officials said in a written release. "Should this weather impact our service area, it may result in new outages or affect ongoing restoration efforts."
