National Donut Day
By: Bill McAllister
Which holiday best sums up the freedoms we enjoy in these United States of America? Flag Day? No. Memorial Day? Maybe. Secretary's Day? Perhaps, if you consider the roles they play on Mad Men. The answer is...National Donut Day. On Friday June 1st we celebrate everything about the donut or doughnut for you culinary types.
Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts will be celebrating the only way they know. By giving away free holey treats.
According to the National Donut Day website the holiday was created by the Salvation Army way back in 1938. It was meant to honor the women who cooked donuts in army helmets and served them to soldiers in World War I. It started in Chicago and per usual, got to us here in Detroit, years later. It's also a way to help promote the Salvation Army. So after you've had your freebie, text "DONUT" to 80888 to make a $10 donation.
