NAACP Announces Honorees For Awards

DETROIT (WWJ) - Kid Rock is among the honorees who will receive awards at this year's NAACP's Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner at Cobo Hall.

Detroit NAACP branch president Reverend Wendell Anthony says he thought about asking Kid Rock to perform, but changed his mind. WWJ's Pat Sweeting spoke with Rev. Anthony and he tells us why: "Don't give me an award and ask me to perform, you getting something from me, we want him to come, sit down, network, sign autographs, make his statement and just enjoy the occasion," says Anthony.

"Now, if he decides to bring his guitar and wants to play a song, we ain't going to fight that," he continued.

"Wherever he goes, he is a champion for Detroit, he has opened businesses in our city. He is very excited about coming to receive this recognition and so we are very excited about putting him out there and really affirming the fact that this is not just about black folk, it's about all folk," says Anthony.

Also being honored this year are officers from the 6th Precinct in Detroit who were involved in a shootout with a kidnap suspect and to the community organization 'Detroit 300'.

The event takes place May 1st.
