Much Ado About April

By the time April rolls around in Michigan, most folks are ready to put cold and snow behind them. Especially coming off this past winter. Snowfall totals topped 67"(67.5" at DTW); making this the 6th snowiest winter on record since the 1880s!

Growing up in Michigan, I know April doesn't always start on a warm note. The cute Easter outfits my Mom painstakingly put together for mid or late April would get covered up by a winter coat!  So it's no surprise we started this April with what appeared to be an April fool's joke.  Snow was in the forecast.

You can see the stark beauty of the day. That's sleet and light snow in the background. A bare limb snapped by a strong wind leans on another tree for support. Gusty winds accompanied the forecast. Morning lows near freezing.

Flash forward to the following weekend, opening day for Tiger baseball.

Fans braved periods of rain and a biting wind. Umbrellas, rain slickers and heavy jackets blended in with Tigers orange and blue. Yet, we ended the weekend with highs in the 80s!

April is typically a transition month. The cold fronts and Lows bringing snow and below average temperatures at the beginning of the month are often supplanted by warm fronts with soaring temps, setting the stage for severe weather.

And just think, we've experienced all that and we still have two more weeks of April to go!  Just know that whatever the weather brings, I'll be working on the forecast to prepare you for your day! -Lori
