Milford To Play Host To Cyclists

DETROIT (WWJ)  Competitive cyclists from across Michigan will participate in the 2012 Michigan State Criterium Championships July 29 in downtown Milford. Cyclists of various levels from junior to professional will compete starting at 8 a.m., and about $6,000 will be awarded to winners throughout the day.

Criterium racing has become popular near Milford since 2009 when the village began holding annual competitions, with more than 350 racers participating in 2011.

Race Announcer Brad Sohner said the competition brings a diverse group of people together.

"From the racers to organizers to fans were among the nicest I'd ever met," he said. "It's a great atmosphere anchored by great people."

The unique style of cycling features cyclists racing multiple laps in teams, with riders known for reaching extremely high speeds around sharp turns. Jim Behrens, a Master's Cat 2 rider, said the high speed makes the track interesting.

"A hairpin turn under the railroad tracks followed by an uphill finish are a challenge," Behrens said.

Men competing in Category 3 and 4 races also will have the opportunity to raise money for a charity or business of their choice. Kids ages 3-14 can participate in the free Kids Fun Race, which will start at 1:15 p.m.
