Michigan's Unemployment Rate Rises

(AP) Michigan says the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate rose 1 percentage point statewide -- and is up in all 17 major job markets, mainly because of the usual winter downturn.

The state reports Michigan's seasonally unadjusted jobless rate hit 8.9 percent in December, up from 7.9 percent in November.

— Ann Arbor, 5.1 percent, compared with 4.3 percent.

— Battle Creek, 7.1 percent, compared with 5.9 percent.

— Bay City, 8.3 percent, compared with 6.8 percent.

— Detroit-Warren-Livonia, 10.2 percent, compared with 9.7 percent.

— Flint, 9.1 percent, compared with 7.8 percent.

— Grand Rapids-Wyoming, 6.5 percent, compared with 5.4 percent.

— Holland-Grand Haven, 6.3 percent, compared with 5.3 percent.

— Jackson, 8.1 percent, compared with 6.8 percent.

— Kalamazoo-Portage, 7.3 percent, compared with 6 percent.

— Lansing-East Lansing, 6.7 percent, compared with 5.6 percent.

— Monroe, 7.6 percent, compared with 6.4 percent.

— Muskegon-Norton Shores, 8.6 percent, compared with 7.5 percent.

— Niles-Benton Harbor, 8.8 percent, compared with 7.2 percent.
