Michigan's May Jobless Rate Dipped To 13.6%

Michigan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has fallen to 13.6 percent. The May figure released Wednesday is down from a national high of 14 percent in April.

The state says Michigan's May jobless rate is the same as it was one year ago. Michigan's jobless rate has been edging downward since reaching 14.5 percent late last year. The national jobless rate for May was 9.7 percent.

The state says total employment in Michigan has increased for five straight months.

The report says total nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 8,000 in May. The biggest gains were in manufacturing and government. Government jobs grew primarily because of temporary workers hired to help conduct the U.S. Census.
