Michigan Oddities and Horror Fest welcomes the bizarre and unique
(CBS DETROIT) — Fans of the macabre and the peculiar journeyed to Monroe Saturday for the first day of the 4th annual Michigan Oddities and Horror Fest.
This is its biggest year yet of the event with more than 170 vendors selling some of the weirdest and most unusual items you will ever see.
"We have original artwork with original movie posters, you know, horror memorabilia, said Nate Thompson, festival organizer. "We have mass costumes, human bones, wet specimens, haunted objects, witchcraft items."
When Thompson came up with the idea, he had no idea what to expect.
"I'm not surprised, but I am grateful. You know, I could tell that there was a big audience for horror here, and just locally, really, in Michigan, all together," said Thompson.
Fast forward four years and the turnout is massive.
"They're into the same thing — horror, art, morbid, and we all accept each other," said Patrisha Hively with Twiztid Trades.
Thompson says horror captivates audiences by offering a thrilling experience with the reassurance of safety.
"What I love about horror movies is that it allows you to get as close as you can to real danger with the knowledge of your completely safe," Thompson said.
It's a community of people that are into the odd, creepy and terrifying.
The Michigan Oddities and Horror Fest continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and children under 8 get in for free.
