An 87-year-old man was airlifted to a hospital in northern lower Michigan after he was struck by a juvenile on a dirt bike Saturday, the Michigan State Police reported.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. on County Road 451 in Presque Isle County; with troopers from the MSP Alpena post witnessing the incident. 

The Rogers City man was walking across the county road with a flashlight at the time, going to his mailbox. Sunset had occurred about 6:20 p.m. that evening in the area. As the man reached the mailbox on the east shoulder of the road, the report said, a juvenile riding a motorist dirt bike without a headlight was northbound on the road and struck the man. 

The victim was airlifted to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Monday. 

The dirt bike operator was not injured. 

Troopers from the Alpena post were assisted on the call by the MSP Gaylord Post, Presque Isle County Sheriff's Office, Rogers City Police Department, Rogers City Ambulance and Rogers City Area First Responders.
