Sex Offender Charged In Kidnapping Attempt

LUDINGTON (AP) - A man who was released from prison earlier this year after serving 12 years for criminal sexual conduct has been charged with trying to kidnap and assault a woman in a West Michigan park.

Ludington police said in a statement 41-year-old Richard Vodvarka was arrested Saturday after a woman walking alone at Cartier Park in Ludington reported a man grabbed her. She broke free and called 911.

Police say Vodvarka was arrested later in the day and was being held at the Mason County Jail on charges including attempted kidnapping and assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct. Bond was set at $750,000.

Police say they didn't know whether Vodvarka had a defense lawyer.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports Vodvarka was released from prison in January.
