M-1 Streetcar Rails Arrive In Detroit

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - The first load of rail for the M-1 Streetcar project has arrived in Detroit, according to a Tweet from one of the project's contractors.

Stacy and Witbeck posted a message on Twitter Wednesday with photos of the rail, and construction equipment unloading the rails, at a staging area in Detroit.

The arrival of the rails signals another step in the construction of the 3.3 mile project which will provide light rail service between Jefferson and the New Center.

As the rail was being delivered, crews continued work on Woodward. The roadway  is closed between Campus Martius and Adams St. for construction. While the street is closed to traffic, businesses along the route are open.

Crews also demolished the west side (southbound lanes) of the Woodward Ave. overpass above the freeway this past weekend.

While construction on the new project moves forward, M-1 officials report crews found rail from Detroit's earlier streetcars. A post on the M-1 Instagram page showed 100-year-old rail crews discovered.
