Local Composer Celebrates Triple-Grammy Win
A University of Michigan professor is among those celebrating Grammy gold.
Classical composer Michael Dougherty was nominated for five Grammy awards, and took home three -- including one for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Daugherty joked in his speech that he's the world's tallest composer at six-foot-eight.
"It's so exciting. The thing is, I hadn't prepared an acceptance speech. So, I had to come up with something very fast, on the spot -- as soon as I found out that I had won the award for best music," Dougherty said.
Dougherty tells WWJ that it was a diverse crowd.
"You know, you're surrounded by all these well-known folks in the music business. What's also kind of crazy is that all the different categories -- from, you know, the Hawaiian music, to rock music, to classical music -- these are juxtaposed," he said.
Daugherty tied for Best Engineered album with another local composer, John McLaughlin Williams.
Daugherty said he's already working on his next composition.
