Lions Lose And Enter The NFL Record Books...Again
The Detroit Lions are once again the answer to a trivia question about futility with their 25th consecutive road loss, 14-12 Sunday in New York against the Buffalo Bills.
It was a game played about as ugly as the weather, and now the Lions re-enter the NFL record books for road losses, a mark they originally set in 2003 at 24.
After the first quarter saw no scoring, Bills' running back Fred Jackson punched in a score from one yard out making it 7-0 with 13:10 to go in the second quarter.
Former Michigan State kicker, Dave Rayner playing for the injured Jason Hanson, hit a 25 yard field goal at the end of the second quarter to make it 7-3 at halftime.
Sunday's game was Rayner's first NFL action since 2008. Bills' quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick shoveled a pass to Jackson for a 16 yard touchdown in the third quarter to make it 14-3 at that point, until Rayner hit a 45 field goal in the fourth quarter to put the score at 14-6 with 5:53 to go.
The Lions got the ball back late in the fourth and QB Shaun Hill led the team down the field, hitting Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson for a 20 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 14-12 Bills with 14 seconds to go.
Unfortunately the Bills' defense was well prepared for a two point conversion, and foiled Shaun Hill's pass attempt to Tight End Brandon Pettigrew. The victory was the first of the season for the Bills (1-8) as the Lions fall to 2-7, and they travel to Dallas next week to face the Cowboys.
