Latest Reshaping Detroit Meeting More Organized
Another standing room-only crowd came out to hear and discuss plans for Detroit's future as part of Mayor Dave Bing's Detroit Works Project.
Close to 1,000 people were in attendance at the American Serbian Memorial Hall Thursday evening, and the meeting was much more organized than the first one where plenty of shouting and finger-pointing was reported.
Bing and other city administrators in charge of the project said that one thing that's not in the Detroit's future is selling off chunks of the city.
"People are afraid that as we put all this land together that there's some secret plan somewhere to sell land to somebody on the outside to come in here and take our city over," Bing said.
"That is not going to happen on my watch, that is not going to happen on my watch," he said.
Citizens were able to tell city leaders about what they want to see in neighborhoods. Many said abandoned buildings need to be torn down.
The project to reshape the city is expected to take a year-and-a-half to complete.
The next meeting is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 18 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Whittier Manor located at 415 Burns Drive.
Two other meetings are scheduled for:
Sept. 21, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., El Kiosko Banquet Hall, 7271 Dix St.
Sept. 22, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E. Warren Ave. (Doors open at 6 p.m.)
