Lansing-Area Woman Dies, Smothers Baby

MERIDIAN TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Police say a 31-year-old Haslett woman apparently passed out and accidentally smothered her 6-month-old son before also dying.

The Lansing State Journal reported Caylen Ottensman and her son Cian were found dead Saturday at a home in Ingham County's Meridian Township after the woman's father reported her missing.

Meridian Township police said they don't yet know what caused the mother's death but that it appeared to be "a tragic accident." Autopsies were expected to confirm whether an illness or seizure caused the mother to fall on her child.
