Kudos For Detroit's Own 'Lemonade Kid'

DETROIT (WWJ) - The lemonade may be long gone but the accolades for Detroit's own 'Lemonade Kid' keep rolling in.

Wayne County Commissioner Irma Clark-Coleman Tuesday presented nine-year-old Joshua Smith with a resolution for his efforts this summer in raising $3,000 for the city.  It's money Joshua wanted set aside for grass cutting in city parks near his west side Detroit neighborhood.

"This ingenious youngster, opened up a lemonade-popcorn stand, with the sole intention of turning over all the proceeds to the city of Detroit and help restore some city services," said Clark-Coleman.

Smith has also been recognized nationally for his efforts.

Smith was upset after learning about his city's cash-strapped financial troubles, so he decided to sell lemonade in front of his home to try to help improve Detroit.

Joshua Smith said he heard a radio report about the city's money problems while en route to his piano lessons and decided to take action. The city's budget deficit exceeds $200 million, and Detroit this year entered into an agreement with the state that's aimed at fixing the city's finances.
