Kalamazoo Protest Set Over Judge's Verdict In Woman's Attack

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A protest is planned in Kalamazoo in response to a judge's decision to convict a man of a reduced charge in an attack on a woman in her home.

The victim and local YWCA officials plan to march Monday from the YWCA to Bronson Park before Adam Shigwadja is sentenced.

Kalamazoo County Judge Pamela Lightvoet convicted him of assault, home invasion and arson in a 2014 attack against Sophia Putney-Wilcox. Critics are upset that Shigwadja wasn't convicted of attempted murder.

The judge said Shigwadja didn't intend to kill Putney-Wilcox, although the victim was cut across the chest and her bedroom was set on fire.

YWCA chief executive Grace Lubwama says the judge failed to recognize domestic violence.
