Joba Chamberlain, Tom Gorzelanny Designated For Assignment

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- Struggling Detroit Tigers relief pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Tom Gorzelanny have been designated for assignment, the team announced Friday.

Chamberlain allowed three solo home runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, raising his season ERA to 4.29. His ERA in 11 outings since the beginning of June was an astronomical 10.00.

Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny has posted a 9.00 ERA since the beginning of June during his first season with the Tigers.

The team called up right-handers Drew VerHagen and Jeff Ferrell on Friday to replace Chamberlain and Gorzelanny in the Tigers' struggling bullpen.

Catcher Bryan Holaday was sent back to Triple-A Toledo to make room for Alex Avila who is returning from a stint on the disabled list.
